Diabetes mellitus - commonly known as diabetes -is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by persistently high blood sugar levels. It is caused either by a deficiency of the hormone insulin or by impaired insulin action within the body's cells. The primary forms are type 1 and type 2 diabetes, which differ fundamentally in their causes and development.
