collateral ligament injury

A collateral ligament injury is a tear, overstretching, or strain of the collateral ligaments (medial or lateral ligaments) that stabilize joints such as the knee, thumb, or finger. It most commonly affects the medial or lateral knee ligaments due to a sideways force, such as in sports accidents.
