metatarsal heads
The term "metatarsal head" (*caput ossis metatarsalis*) refers to the thickened ends of the five metatarsal bones, which adjoin the metatarsophalangeal joints (toe joints) just in front of the ball of the foot. While they bear a significant portion of the body's weight during walking, they are highly prone to painful conditions - known as metatarsalgia - resulting from misalignment or overloading.
